It is common for children with allergies to be told to avoid certain foods. However, accidents can happen, which is why it is important to have an Action Plan in place. An Action Plan provides information about what to do if your child is having an allergic reaction. Anyone who is looking after a child with allergies should be familiar with their Action Plan. This includes daycares and schools, but also includes after-school activity groups, camps, and informal carers such as grandparents and babysitters.
Your allergist will choose the action plan that is right for your child. This may include the use of an adrenaline auto-injector device such as an EpiPen.
ASCIA Action Plans can be found on the ASCIA website: www.allergy.org.au
If your child has allergies and needs an Action Plan, talk to your GP about seeing a paediatric allergist.
